“Our goal has always been to make the many benefits of gardening accessible to everyone,” said Abbey Hart, interim nursery manager. “By introducing houseplants to our sales, we’re creating more opportunities for people to engage with plants, even if they don’t have outdoor space.”

The houseplants have been propagated and cared for by the dedicated Learning by Leading™ Nursery Management student interns, highlighting the important role these students play in shaping the nursery’s offerings.

“The small, but curated selection is to gauge interest,” said Hart. “Our student teams have worked diligently to grow these plants. It’s exciting to see their efforts come to fruition, and we can’t wait to see how the community responds.”

Why Houseplants?

In addition to their aesthetic appeal, houseplants are known to provide multiple mental and physical health benefits.

“Caring for houseplants can be incredibly rewarding. Not only do they bring natural beauty indoors, but there are also studies that show how interacting with plants can reduce stress and boost well-being,” said Mara Feldman, Learning by Leading™ Nursery Management Co-coordinator.

“We hope this will inspire more people—especially those new to gardening—to experience those benefits firsthand.”

Though scientific studies on the effects of houseplants on indoor air quality have been inconclusive, Feldman noted that this shouldn’t overshadow the numerous other benefits of having houseplants at home.

“Houseplants are fantastic for creating a peaceful, vibrant environment, and we’re thrilled to bring this opportunity to our community,” Feldman said.
